How to run a virtual town hall that people trust

A plan for company or community town halls with moderated questions and clear follow-up.

Choose the format

For a large audience, a webinar works better than a meeting: the leaders are on stage and the audience watches and asks questions. For a small team, a normal meeting with everyone on video is fine.

Collect questions early

Open a question form in the invite so people can send questions before the day. This brings out topics that matter and reduces awkward silences.

Use a moderator

A moderator reads questions, combines similar ones and makes sure hard questions get an answer. Visible moderation builds trust.

Make it accessible

Turn on live captions and share slides in advance. Offer a recording for people in other shifts.

Close with commitments

End by stating what leadership will do next and by when. Send a written summary the same day, including questions you could not answer live and the date you will answer them.
