Online classes for kids: a safety checklist for teachers and parents
A simple checklist to keep children safe in online classes.
For teachers: control who comes in
Use a unique link for each class, switch on the waiting room and add a passcode. Admit only students you recognise and lock the meeting once class starts.
Keep the class space private
Do not post the link publicly. Share it with parents or the school’s app. If a stranger joins, remove them and change the link.
Set simple rules
Agree that students will mute by default, raise their hand to speak and keep chat respectful. Tell them what to do if something upsets them.
For parents: set up the space
Sit the child in a shared room, check the background and be nearby during class. Keep the device updated and do not share links elsewhere.
Recording and photos
Teachers should not record without the school’s policy and parent consent. Participants should not take screenshots of other children.
After class
Share notes through the school’s approved channel. Teachers can use the attendance report to confirm who attended.
